A Day in the Life of a Pharmacy

I came across this post from one of my friends. This was originally entitled "A Day in the Life of a Pharmacist" but let's be quite frank, a pharmacist would never touch the phone or bill claims or input a prescription or any of these duties listed below. Those are all jobs of the technicians.

But other than the title, this scenario is 110% correct and I laughed at how dead on it was.

Being in pharmacy I have come to dislike all people (because everyone, lets be honest, is an idiot when it comes to being out in public), and have realized that the human race is quite despicable (Eric has pointed out to me that really only ~10% of the people I come across are self absorbed, prideful scumbags, but those wretched people who make my life miserable at work are who I remember. The other 90% are respectable and pleasant and good people, but I don't remember them as much as I remember the a**holes). Pardon me.

To continue on with my rant, no one knows about what a pharmacist does (saves you from careless doctors, is a patient advocate and is the gate keeper of the drugs you put into your body), but is in shock when they find out how much pharmacists make (And why you ask?? Because pharmacists spend 4 years in pharmacy school earning a doctorate to learn everything about drugs, the human body and how they work on organ systems to keep you safe). So excuse my rant, *I do feel better* and enjoy the article.

A Day in the Life of a Pharmacy

WARNING: This post may be painful for those in the profession to read.

Why does it take 20 minutes to fill your Vicodin?

Here's the Scenario:

You come to the counter. I am on the phone with a drunk dude who wants the phone number to the grocery store next door. After I instruct him on the virtues of 411, you tell me your doctor was to phone in your prescription to me. Your doctor hasn't, and you're unwilling to wait until he does. Being in a generous mood, I call your doctors office and am put on hold for 5 minutes, then informed that your prescription was phoned in to my competitor on the other side of town. Phoning the competitor, I am immediately put on hold for 5 minutes before speaking to a clerk, who puts me back on hold to wait for the pharmacist. Your prescription is then transferred to me, and now I have to get the 2 phone calls that have been put on hold while this was being done. Now I return to the counter to ask if we've ever filled prescriptions for you before. For some reason, you think that "for you" means "for your cousin" and you answer my question with a "yes", whereupon I go the computer and see you are not on file.

The phone rings.

You have left to do something very important, such as browse through the monster truck magazines, and do not hear the three PA announcements requesting that you return to the pharmacy. You return eventually, expecting to pick up the finished prescription.....

The phone rings.

......only to find out that I need to ask your address, phone number, date of birth, if you have any allergies and insurance coverage. You tell me you're allergic to codeine. Since the prescription is for Vicodin I ask you what exactly codeine did to you when you took it. You say it made your stomach hurt and I roll my eyes and write down "no known allergies" You tell me......

The phone rings.

.....you have insurance and spend the next 5 minutes looking for your card. You give up and expect me to be able to file your claim anyway. I call my competitor and am immediately put on hold. Upon reaching a human, I ask them what insurance they have on file for you. I get the information and file your claim, which is rejected because you changed jobs 6 months ago. An asshole barges his way to the counter to ask where the bread is.

The phone rings.

I inform you that the insurance the other pharmacy has on file for you isn't working. You produce a card in under 10 seconds that you seemed to be unable to find before. What you were really doing was hoping your old insurance would still work because it had a lower copay. Your new card prominently displays the logo of Nebraska Blue Cross, and although Nebraska Blue cross does in fact handle millions of prescription claims every day, for the group you belong to, the claim should go to a company called Caremark, whose logo is nowhere on the card.

The phone rings.

A lady comes to the counter wanting to know why the cherry flavored antacid works better than the lemon cream flavored antacid. What probably happened is that she had a milder case of heartburn when she took the cherry flavored brand, as they both use the exact same ingredient in the same strength. She will not be satisfied though until I confirm her belief that the cherry flavored brand is the superior product. I file your claim with Caremark, who rejects it because you had a 30 day supply of Vicodin filled 15 days ago at another pharmacy. You swear to me on your mother's'....

The phone rings.

.......life that you did not have a Vicodin prescription filled recently. I call Caremark and am immediately placed on hold. The most beautiful woman on the planet walks buy and notices not a thing. She has never talked to a pharmacist and never will. Upon reaching a human at Caremark, I am informed that the Vicodin prescription was indeed filled at another of my competitors. When I tell you this, you say you got hydrocodone there, not Vicodin. Another little part of me dies.

The phone rings.

It turns out that a few days after your doctor wrote your last prescription, he told you to take it more frequently, meaning that what Caremark thought was a 30-day supply is indeed a 15 day supply with the new instructions. I call your doctor's office to confirm this and am immediately placed on hold. I call Caremark to get an override and am immediately placed on hold. My laser printer has a paper jam. It's time for my tech to go to lunch. Caremark issues the override and your claim goes though. Your insurance saves you 85 cents off the regular price of the prescription.

The phone rings.

At the cash register you sign....

The phone rings.

......the acknowledgement that you received a copy of my HIPPA policy and that I offered the required OBRA counseling for new prescriptions. You remark that you're glad that your last pharmacist told you you shouldn't take over the counter Tylenol along with the Vicodin, and that the acetaminophen you're taking instead seems to be working pretty well. I break the news to you that Tylenol is simply a brand name for acetaminophen, and you don't believe me. You fumble around for 2 minutes looking for your checkbook and spend another 2 minutes making out a check for four dollars and sixty seven cents. You ask why the tablets look different than those you got at the other pharmacy. I explain that they are from a different manufacturer. Tomorrow you'll be back to tell me they don't work as well.

Now imagine this wasn't you at all, but the person who dropped off their prescription three people ahead of you, and you'll start to have an idea why.....your prescription takes so damn long to fill.

Lifetime Fitness

That's right, I have joined my first gym. Lifetime Fitness, right down the road from me. 24/7 access. Fun classes. Beautiful people to inspire me. Two free personal training sessions. Operation get ripped is upon me. I should take pictures or something.

I did a STEP class this morning. It reminded me of when I did Step at BYU. I was in shape then and it was the highlight of my week. I seriously love Step classes. Next week I'm doing more Step, Hip Hop, Zumba and spinning. Love it.

Sleep Talk

Eric, while asleep on the couch sleep talking: "You're implying that there's no electronic excitement with chewy dog?" As Ella is chewing her bone close to Eric's face and I am silently laughing and writing this all down.

We have saved some golden gems of sleep talk quotes from each other. This is definitely one of our favorite things to record.

25th BIRTHDAY Day 3

My friend Diane threw Jenny and me a GREAT birthday dinner. I don't think I've had a better birthday dinner. It was a memorable night hanging out, talking and laughing with good friends from school. We dined at the Macaroni Grill and had a talented opera singer sing happy birthday to us in Italian. One of the best memories of the night was telling the stories of how each of the couples got engaged. So much laughter. I loved that night. I wish Eric could have made it but he was busy studying for a test. Thanks Diane! You really made my/our night SO special.

25th BIRTHDAY Day 2

My school (University of Colorado School of Pharmacy) had a Winterland Masqurade Ball at the DenverTech Hyatt on Dec 3, 2010. This was part of my birthday celebration weekend, because Eric agreed to dress up and dance with me on account of my birthday. If this ball had occurred on any other day, I would have had my work cut out for me in convincing him to come.

Eric and I usually duck out of dances early because one of us doesn't like to dance socially, but this dance was different. I made Eric, ahem- I mean one of us dance and I had one of the funnest nights I've had in a long time.

Eric was a great sport and I appreciate him coming and dancing the night away with me. One notable event  to mention that I will have a hard time forgetting, was the upperclassman girl in the black dress who was drunk off her arse. She couldn't even walk in a straight line... and so she resulted in holding onto a railing and dancing with her butt sticking out into the crowd. She then saw a guy she wanted to dance with, stumbled over to him, bumped and ground him for a second before she fell right onto her back... with legs wide open. YIKES. I was embarrassed for her.

All in all though, I had a great time dancing and watching my fellow peers (I'm not proud to say this) behave in their drunken state. Why they chose to drink so much at a nice event I don't know, nor condone, but they were doing what they chose to do, and have to suffer the consequences of looking like fools in our professional community of becoming doctors of pharmacy.

Enjoy the photos!

25th BIRTHDAY Day 1

My 25th birthday aka I am now a quarter of a century old, was wonderful. One of the best birthdays of my adult life. Last year my birthday was less than par, it really kind of sucked, and I guess I had to have a bad birthday to appreciate and marvel at this years great birthday weekend. It all started with my birthday day. Eric woke up at 5am to make me a delicious breakfast of pancakes, eggs and bacon *yummmm, bacon!*
If I don't have the best husband in the world than I'd like to meet him. Not only did Eric wake up before me to make breakfast before I had to leave for school, but he made my breakfast into an awesome heart shaped face with hair! Too awesome.

At school, my friend Christine made me delicious, moist cupcakes, which we shared with our friends. It took me back to elementary school when we would make cupcakes for our birthday and share them with our entire class. Christine also got me a caramel apple candle which scents up our entire home, highlighters (because we sit next to each other in class and share my 5 highlighters everyday) and a gift certificate to Staples (because we are just that nerdy and love school supplies). She's an awesome friend AND we live right next to each other. What are the odds... we interviewed on the same day (I still remember her, slightly, from our interview on Feb.1, 2010), we became friends, found out that we lived next to each other, and now carpool to school. She's also one of the smartest people I know.

For my birthday dinner we celebrated at Outback Steakhouse, thanks to my parents-in-law for sending me a generous gift certificate. Eric and I ate delicious steaks and dessert cheesecake. We also had a not-so-great waiter who forgot about us, to which the head manager had to take over. Outside the restaurant, as we were getting into our car, I got to enjoy a spastic, sa-weet dance from Eric who was rocking out to a Christmas jam. What a perfect end to a perfect day. Eric always achieves putting a smile on my face and laughter into my heart, I love him so much!

Notice the fancy, maroon, sweater I'm wearing... yeah, it was a birthday gift from Eric. He picked it out without my input and I love it, I'm so impressed with him. The gift I'm unwrapping above was a secret surprise Eric was working on for a month before my birthday. See girls, isn't he the best! It was a Scentsy ~ a decorative wax melter that scents up your entire house with different smelling scents of your choice. I LOVE IT.

This and That

One of my New Year's Resolutions is to blog more. I like to capture what happens in my life through some means of a journal, and right now I blog about once a month... if that. I also think it is very important to WRITE, and so, here I am, Jan 2, 2010, commencing on my 2011 resolution.

The above picture was taken by my dad after our Thanksgiving feast. Have I blogged about our feast yet?? I think I may have, but it was so noteworthy that I'll mention it again. My dad made the best *untraditional* Thanksgiving spare ribs I have EVER had. They were out-of-this world delicious. And as a side note, Eric and I were at my parents house on the 30th for our Christmas/New Years celebration, and this time my dad made the best homemade fried chicken Eric and I have EVER had. My dad is quite the chef. Actually both of my parents can cook very well... I wonder why their skills were NOT passed onto me???

After spending time at my parents, Eric and I headed home to decorate our FIRST, ever, Christmas tree. We've spent four Christmas holiday's together as a married couple, and this is the first time we've had enough time/energy/money/motivation to get a tree. Our tree is so beautiful and I think we should keep it up all year... while listening to Christmas music all year as well.

Ella didn't know what to think when we had to put some of our furniture in her room (our master bedroom closet) to make room for the tree.

Eric and I love our home and are so grateful for it.
