Last Saturday Ella, our 9 month old puppy, hunted and killed her first bird.
Sad.
Lately I've been pointing out "birdies" to her. When I say that word she crouches down and searches out for the bird. When she sees the bird she locks in on it. Slowly, she inches her way towards the unsuspecting, innocent creature. And then she lunges. But she never comes close to catching the bird. That's what made it so fun to watch. The fact that she wanted the bird and was trying to hunt it, but could never get it.
Until one Saturday when Eric, Ella and I were on a bike ride on the Cherry Creek trail. I pointed out a bird that was sitting in a field of grass. I had no idea it was an injured bird. As she was running towards it I saw that the bird couldn't fly. I yelled and yelled at Ella to stop and to come back to me. It was all over in less than 10 seconds. The bird died immediately.
Ella is a killer. Natural instincts. Bird predator.
It's all my fault too. Stupid me for showing her that bird.
RIP birdie. I'm sorry.

that is so crazy. kevin killed his first mouse this week, but I see him staring at the birds in our trees all the time, especially when he climbs them.
I guess we've got to remember its all a part of the great circle of life... :)
